A Review of Wyvern by Virginia Erum

coinliddleI had the pleasure of meeting Virginia last school year through her daughter Brianna, who was a student in my class. She heard about Wyvern through her daughter, and asked me if she could read it. She also kindly accepted my request for a review and provided a very flattering one, which I have shared below.

“I was hooked on this book as soon as I read the words “I have never met a creature as strange as a wyvern.” This prepared me for a story that wasn’t just something to read, but an enchanting memory that I had the honour of experiencing. Sure enough, I was not disappointed.

IMG_1208As a parent of a preteen, I appreciated how the author captured the essence of what it means to be a child of that age. He managed to depict the struggle with feelings of isolation, attraction to another and trying to find comfort in who they are and the people they are growing into accurately. On a lighter note, I actually found some of the interactions between the young characters & the adults around them to be quite humorous. The expressions used, the playful banter and sarcastic tones are a perfect representation of my own preteen. I believe the main characters in this novel can be seen as an inspiration for young adults. They are examples of how to overcome obstacles to find the strength to stand up for what is right, to be confident in who you are and learn to accept the behaviours or characteristics that are outside the general interpretation of what is considered normal.

As a reader, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author writes with an obvious love of the world and the characters he has created. His descriptions of the scenery; buildings, landscape, people and places were written in such fine detail, the world in its entirety is brought to life in your mind. By the end of the book I became so connected to the plights and relationships of the characters that, I actually found myself sharing their sadness, confusion, anger and happiness. The story itself is paced in just the right way, with the proper balance of action, mystery and relaxation. Not only did I find myself drawn to the characters, I also enjoyed the unexpected plot twists. Every time I thought I had things figured out, the story took a turn and led me deeper into startling mysteries and scenarios.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy & mystery mixed in with some inner reflection and wit.”
